  1. Scores for October 15, 2011

I like the way you think. Of course people are going to argue with it, but it is clever. In reference to hostrauser
  2. Oh man what a season. To start off great job to Morton High School! What a great accomplishment! Each one of you should be very proud of yourselves for all the hardwork youve put in this season. I didnt get to go to Grand Nationals, but of the bands I have seen at Indy and on Youtube, I just wanted to say that these shows are amazing. Avon's show was just brilliantly designed. I really enjoyed it. Its pretty amazing to see a band like that. So congrats to them. Ive watched Tarpon Springs on youtube a few times now, never actually getting real good quality videos though, but they do a great job of performing their show. It is really quite freaky. BA and Carmel had very cheerful and happy shows. I can see why BA won Fan favorite. Interesting concept to base it off the Wizard of Oz. Also, congrats on a great season everyone! Hopefully Ill be able to attend GN and see more IL bands make it into semis! P.S. Does anyone know why Harrison High School from Kennesaw Georgia doesnt go to GN? Do you think they would make Finals?
  3. ISU reviews

You're not the only one...we have some "enthusiastic" alumni who seemingly don't know how to react as observers of a show after years as performers...some of the parents have wondered about this and discussed it in detail, and eventually we just chalk it up to the kids being truly excited about watching their former band mates and perhaps going over the top in their support. The LW schools do seem to attract a large number of alums to ISU. I know my son enjoys catching up with old friends for that one weekend each October! When NN went to the Ypsilanti Regional in MI last year, we had the pleasure of watching LWN perform. And we sat by a band parent who had a tea kettle with a bell shouting "ITS GOOD TO BE GOLD". It has literally become our own cheer now. I have noticed this cheering thing before. It was when I was sitting by some band moms during LWC show in 07 though. They were yelling everytime they played a phrase right. I think clapping would suffice, idk if yelling or screaming is exactly the right way to do it.
  4. Rock island

Do you know if there is a recording of their show? I heard about them winning Crowd Appeal at a local competition as well. I would love to see it.
  5. BOA Indianapolis Regional Schedule

Wow. Stacked. Finals: Father Ryan Marian Catholic Lawrence Central Castle Harrison Lake Central Paul Laurence Dunbar Carmel Center Grove Centerville Avon So.....who's #12?.......I'd say Lake Park... BUT....I could easily see LWE ousting PLD or Father Ryan also. Here's to THAT. Im pretty sure there are only 10 finalists. And I wouldnt Count Ben Davis Out either.
  6. ISU reviews

I doubt its ever been recorded. HOWEVER, we did not have a halftime show this year because there were only 3 home games. But in the past, we have done an Indian Jones Raiders march, American Salute (compliation of american marches), we would have done battle hymn of the republic this year (its usually our parade tune with drill) and is like 5-7 mins. along with a Pom feature. Weve done star wars stuff. Famous cow boy music. Its all general pep band stuff. Things the audience would regonize.
  7. Scores for 10/23

Man there is a lot of whining going on this year... Anyways, I had a chance to see a couple of bands this year. And it was alot of fun. I think the rain delay just made the day more interesting! (sorry for the bands who had to perform when it was pouring.) But I saw Normal West, VJA, UT twice, Eureka, Prospect, LWW, Warren, and Marian. You can tell these bands worked really hard. Marian was pretty mind blowing. And the concept was interesting. Nice to see them trying to be funny at some parts. VJA had great music and a great show. I definetly liked their show. In regards to their placing, I doubt they are worried about it. You guys are making mountains out of mole hills - worry about yourself. I think Prospect may have had an issue with Maxing out their show too early in the season. I think they are capable of doing a much more complex show. But either way I loved it. Clair de lune was beautiful. Eureka always seems to amaze me. I saw them last year and this year. Their drill always seems to be squeaky clean at ISU and they definetly play their hearts out. I had a band angle for Normal west so I couldnt fully enjoy their show. I realized they played the same song as UT. UT was interesting. But I was kinda confused about their show, it seemed kinda dark but then it had words like BELIEVE and TRUST and HOPE. But I did get the pleasure of seeing them play twice. Warren's band was interesting. Of course its hard to get all of them clean. But they played their best and improved alot since the LW invite. They should change the way they tune. Like use mirco sections and tune that way? They werent very in tune during their finals performance. LWW was a stunner. I did however have a feeling they would make finals. But no one else predicted they would. Their show could go without the temples I think. I didnt understand the purpose of those. But again, a small band who marched and played their hearts out. So yeah. Thats how I felt about what I saw. Fun day and a great senior year season. As for everyone else - stop complaining, its annoying. It is what it is and just enjoy what happened.
  8. Scores for 10/23

They announced Warren Township in finals. Not VJA?...Unless they misannouced.

  10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8De99EkBmE&feature=player_embedded An amazing short (2 minute) video about a WWII veteran's story about the power of music. Didnt think this deserved to be in the "Off Topic" Part of the forums. I considerate to be very on topic since we are a site about music. Please watch it, its very moving and has only 8k views.
  11. Scores for the weekend of 9/25

Yeah I agree, the scores for NIU were a bit low. At least they were consistent at being low. =\ Anyways, I was able to watch all of 4A perform and that was a great experience. Especially being able to see some bands that Ive never even heard of. What really amazed me this year was Prospect. They are very clean and they sound really great. I enjoyed LP as well, but I felt that there was too much dancing/moving around type of thing. Reminded me of the Cavaliers. I hope everyone had a fun weekend!

  14. Scores for September 11, 2010

I wasn't there, but knowing the music from Ronald Reagan's show I think it was the 2nd movement from Lincolnshire Posy (Horkstow Grange). Its from the first movement. The part that sounded most familiar from warm ups is at like 1:45 of Beyond Perimeters.
  15. Scores for September 11, 2010

Great Job to everyone who competed yesterday! I had alot of fun at Lake Park. Also, did anyone else notice that Lockport is playing a song from Beyond Perimeters by Ronald Reagan? We were standing by them at warm ups and I knew I had heard the song before, and I realized it was from Beyond Perimeters. Whats the name of that piece?
  16. ISU - 2010

I like this idea. It does make it more fair. TBH, from what I have experienced, I have always felt bad for the bands in 1A and 4A. During the 3 hour drive to Normal, IL I wonder *There are some bands who are performing now or had already performed and had to get up at like 5am...* But the only concern I have is that 1A-4A bands arent exactly as good as 5A-6A bands. Of course there ARE bands that are amazing at what they do in 1A-4A, however 7 Bands from 1A-4A doesnt exactly match up with 7 bands from 5A-6A if you know what I mean. If this means bands who at 5A and 6A who should have made it (NC and WV) are being dropped, then that still strikes me as some sort of problem. Think about it, think about it. Being from NN I know that NC was going crazy in 07 when they made Finals. They go to State without the mindset that they have a GOOD chance of making it to finals. (Just look at the previous 5 years). And when you finally have a good enough score to make it, you cant get in but a band who isnt as good gets to have a spot in finals. I would be pretty upset. Thats just my concern. I think the benefits of the new system exceed the negatives it brings. Lets see how it turns out this year. I can't wait, thats for sure.
  17. Today, August 5, 2010. A tragic accident happened to a school bus full of marching band students on their way to a six flags day of fun. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-08-05-school-bus-accident_N.htm My heart goes out to them and their town. I just thought you guys should be aware of this, it's just as devastating as the American Fork accident.

  19. This was stolen from the NNHSmusic.org website. And I thought we should make our own for us Band memebrs and parents to follow and use during competitions we watch. So feel free to add to the list that follows. Lets see how many we can get! Do get to the show early to get a good seat. Sit as high and centered in the bleachers as possible, so you can get the full effect. Try to sit with other NNHS parents, so you can feed off each others
  20. What would you like to see/What can we do?

I was thinking that maybe in the future, when giving details about competitions, when the Judges for the show are posted, that you post what competitions they have already been to or will be going to. Idk why but im curious about that sometimes. For Example. Music General Effect - Dan Balash (Lake Park, ISU)
  21. Favorite Pieces

What songs did you play by him?I personally have played Metroplex in marching band my freshman year; Longford Legend, Integrity, The Message on the Rock in Symphonic Winds, Graduation Band, and freshman band respectively Ah Nice. I personally played Choreography as a mass band with all the concert band memebers. I also played Flight of the Piasa. I got to hear Chiaroscuro: Symphonic Dances in Shades of Darkness and Light which is a Grade 5 by him. Cool Piece. I would see a marching band show done from that.
  22. Favorite Drum Corps Shows

Cavaliers Samurai to add to that list.
  23. Favorite Pieces

LOVE ROBERT SHELDON! He visited West a lot because he lives like right down the street lol Apparently he just finished writing a Grade 5 that one of the all state bands will be playing What songs did you play by him?
  24. Favorite Show

Beyond Perimeters is definetly a great show. One of my favorites as well. I also really enjoyed LD Bells Transcendents. Along with Broken Arrows Run(a)way. For IL bands I really liked Mortons Brave new world. I think Craig Fitzpatrick did a great job with the music and drill in that show. Expecially the Dvaroks New World Symphony parts. Marians 07 an d08 show were really cool as well. Lake Parks Clockwork was my favorite from the past 3 years as well.
  25. Scores for 10/24

"To me, being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It's not about winning. It's about you and your relationship to yourself and your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn't let them down, because you told them the truth. And that truth is that you did everything that you could. There wasn't one more thing that you could've done." - Coach Gaines [Friday Night Lights] I know this quote is from a football TV show but it has the same mindset for members of a marching band. After reading all of these posts on this topic I feel that everyone is lacking the most important thing about marching band. Which is working hard and having fun. Playing your heart out and doing the best you can. Knowing that no matter what happens with the judging panel, you know you did your best and so did your band. A wise friend from the Lake Park marching band once told me that Lake Park could have the best performance of their whole season, but end up placing last at ISU and still be proud of them selves. Walking off the field with the feeling that they finished what they started. They created a marching band show from nothing but a group of band members with one goal and one dream. To max out the show and perform it the best they could. Now I promise you, that every single student that marched on that field last night performed their hearts out. They performed the best they could. That they were focused, they were confident, and that they did it. They maxed out their show and they performed. (Of course some bands arent really maxed out yet because their season isnt over yet but you know what I meant) But what I see on these forums when I come home after hearing the results are a bunch of band members or band fans that just dont understand this. Everyone here is complaining that this band deserved to beat this band. Or these guys deserved to be in finals. This judge was total BS! Seriously? Is that what marching band is about? I thought marching band was about performing a show. Doing your best and impressing the crowd. Not about the shiny dust collectors. Not about beating another band. Its not all about making finals either. Its about performing the best you can and leaving the rest on the field. For all I care their could be no judging system. But people want feedback. There could be no trophies. We dont even show them off anyway. There could be no 1st no 2nd. It wouldnt matter and it shouldnt. That is not the point of a marching band. Thats not what being "Perfect" is. Thats not why our band and almost every band goes out to perform. We perform for the crowd. For the feeling it gives us. To be truthful, I bet these band memebers dont even care that you guys think they deserved to be 4th, 5th, or 12th or 1231st. If you have problem with placements that your opinion. But lets redefine what these forums are about. Are they here to discuss which band is BETTER than which band? OR is it here to discuss about a bands achievements? Its okay to have predictions. Thats cool. But then to get results and find that your predictions were wrong and then go about all pissed off. All debating, frustrated that your band didnt get the awards or placements YOU wanted it to get is something that you should keep inside your own head. Why cant you say how you enjoyed bands instead of bashing bands. or stating your opinion on whcih bands you liked. Final summation. Bands are out here to perform. All bands do the best they could. Who cares what place they got? Leave it on the field. We all performed, we did our best, we are proud of eachother and us. Stating that you thought another band deserved to win or beat another band is like saying they deserved the bigger trophy. Because that is the only thing that they benefit from getting a higher place. If they didnt make finals well they still had a great performance. Who are you to speak for them and make assessments of members that you werent apart of? IF you are apart of the band and your complaining then that is just sad and degrading. In conclusion, every band performed they best, did the best they could, bands maxed out their shows, they impressed the crowd, they built something out of nothing and they are proud of it and they can look at their fellow bandmates and know they didnt let them down. In my eyes they are perfect. Because thats what being perfect is. I will not be replying to any replies to this post. I would just like to say that every band did a wonderful job and that I dont care what place you got, you performed and gave us a great show and you should be proud of your selves.
