Close it??? Are you kidding? This is just a discussion. Let's not shut down civil debate just because we don't like it. I did not use any four letter words or make any comment derogatory towards any programs, kids or bands.

Now I see. Still upset about my inference regarding judging at the Tiger Ambush. By the way the Tiger Ambush was just an example of a problem (people insisted on an example) that I felt you see generally though most competitions and that is that scores tend to rise as the competition progresses. Not only that but I stated that the Tiger Ambush is a quality competition!!!! Also I said that the final order of the finish inside the classes seemed to be correct throughout the day. But, in the current discussion I am echoing what I have been hearing from every one, save a few on this site, that all judging unbiased. Following that logic, a logic you have employed and espoused yourself, the judging is unbiased and therefore it is the only marker we can use as a comparative model for quality of marching bands regarding competition score. Sorry I ruffled your feathers a bit. However, the "they do well" comment about a premiere program in Southern Illinois that just finished first at every competition, needed defending. I would defend Edwardsville or any other Southern Illinois program that was given such a backhanded compliment especially after such a great accomplishment. I will agree with one thing you said without reservation, you do "know nothing of bands south of 64..."

So let me get this straight, number one finishes at unbiased competition is not a criteria for who is better, but your opinion is?? "Not nearly on the same level" ?? They did not go head to head and most likely would not, Morton is 80% bigger or more. Your disdain for Southern Illinois Marching Bands outside of the Metro East is showing,
  4. Southern IL Bands

Why do you think the two are exclusive (winning and opportunity or score vs. giving their best show)? You imply that bands that perform well and consistently win competitions have the wrong motivation. Not true. The motives are pure they just get higher scores in competitions.

Thank you for proving my point. Morton is outstanding, but they had a 3rd place finish this year. Did you see how easy I said they are "outstanding"? Can you bring yourself to say the same about the Murphysboro Crimson Express?

"...they do well." Talk about an understatement! There is no program and I mean no program in Illinois that has as many awards and #1 finishes in the past 10 years. In rural Illinois (Schools of 1000 or so) they out perform all comers year in and year out! When head to head this band routinely out performs bands four times their size. So I guess your right "they do well."

Great article on the band program in Murphysboro! http://bit.ly/1u1BYou No doubt the best band in rural Illinois!

Thanks for the explanation. You're the man!

I am likewise not sure. It is possible that this is just an old type of judging that has been carried forward? Or it could be a concoction of their own. Each competition has their quirks. Having been at the competition, I can tell you that they generally got it right. I get to show a bit of my bias here, I feel that Murphysboro's music was better than Mehlville and much better than Belleville West. But other than that the placements were OK, although I am not sure how they got to their recorded numbers.

I'm for it! Now get it done! Any time there is a structure, no matter how flawed, it will fight change. Unlike other non-traditional sports that fight for IHSA recognition to help establish it as a "real" program (like bass fishing), marching is already established. I totally agree with how you spelled things out, but it would be a mammoth undertaking and I don't even know where to get started.

Murphysboro Crimson Express does it again!!! The Crimson won their division again, this time at Pinckneyville, and have gone undefeated all season long. They have finished first at the Tiger Ambush Classic, McKendree Preview of Champions, Washington Marching Festival, SIU Music & Motion and the Pinckneyville Mardi Gras Field Show and Parade. Along with the firsts, they have also won too many caption awards to mention here. This once again proves the quality and dominance of the program, making it one of the best in the state. Congrats to Michael Moreland and the Crimson Express. It was great to see the police and firetruck escort when coming back into town honoring the band!

The Pinckneyville competition should be a good one in AA Field. Murphysboro will be going for the clean sweep, so far they have finished first in every class they have competed in this year. Mascoutah will be tough, although they have competed already in the same competition this year and Murphysboro won on total points. Mascoutah has a real good show and if Murphysboro stumbles look for them to win. (Murphysboro won first in 2A with all captions and the small school Grand Champ with a 82.55 at McKendree and Mascoutah was third in 4A with a score of 80.20) Mascoutah's band and school is about twice the size of Murphysboro. Usually, every band has a real bad performance sometime in the year and that has yet to happen to the Crimson Express. Hopefully it is not this week. I have never seen Mexico or Civic Memorial.

I have no idea why you had so few in relation to your school size. It could be your band has very high standards to a lack of emphasis on the program in the school and everything in between. Basing it on school size allows for fair competition throughout and then the school gets to decide how much they stress band. If winning isn't everything according to your school you don't have to take it seriously and pour resources into it. That comes with the understanding that your band will not compete well against competition that takes marching seriously. It is a better system than the hodge podge that we currently have. For instance Murphysboro will compete this week against a program that is roughly twice as big. If the state decided to go with a plan like this, then individual shows would have to be approved for state competitions with those guidelines. I doubt it will ever happen.

I think we can all agree that band is not a sport (it is more demanding), however some ideas from various sports could be used to make competition more fair. There is no sport comparable to marching band. It takes grace of gymnastics, the teamwork of football, endurance, musical skill, dedication, hard work and much more. I feel this would increase the competition and consistency.
