Update: It was pointed out to us that also recently deceased is Dr. Alfred Reed, known best as a composer and arranger of works for bands. More information is available from Bands of America.

While not exactly HS Band news, we thought the following was important enough on the Illinois Marching Band community to share on this site:

Dale Hopper, Western Illinois University’s legendary bands and jazz director, died unexpectedly Sept. 16 at his home. He was 64 years old.

Hopper retired in May 2002 following 23 years as Western. He served 20 years as director of bands, receiving highest acclaim for the Marching Leathernecks Band and the Jazz Studio Orchestra (JSO).

Hopper had more than 60 publications to his credit in addition to his best-selling book “Corps Style Marching” (1977) and “The Drill Designer’s Idea Book” (1988).

The full press release is at Western Illinois University’s website.
