Thoughts for the weekend:

I was at the Joust and as always it was incredibly enjoyable to attend even when every show is in the debut phase. As for the day I had a few thoughts:

1) I'm very interested in Victor J Andrew, Lockport Township, and Prospect's progress this season. All of them have tons of potential to be really special. The Indy Super Regional is going to be very enjoyable come a month from now.

2) Show Design seems to be a bit off this year. I don't know what it is, but I just felt there were a lot of shows with great musical selections and playing, but I ended up scratching my head a lot and saying what does this have to do with X concept.

3) Bigger is not always better. Kind of a reaffirmed thought I have been having. Take it in any way you will, but ultimately size, musical and visual difficulty, props, etc. don't matter if something starts to gets lost or something gets masked because of distractions, lack of understanding or lack of skill.

4) SHORT RANT: I'm either spoiled by Drum Corps, Killer Orchestras/Bands or even top tier marching bands, but I wish groups made my heart stop with their power. Less Synth more everything else. I don't know which fix it is for every group, but I'm stuck between two things: Better Part-Writing or More Individual Training for the students. It becomes glaring which groups have it and who do not. Prospect, Lockport and Wheeling (MY GOD THOSE KIDS ARE UNBELIEVABLE) are I think the easiest 3 groups who most definitely have both. Probably not every student has private lessons per say, but I assume a significant portion does. Unfortunately not every school has the luxury of having a full applied staff, however, I know for me that simple fact at least made me have to search a little bit to find someone. Practicing quite a bit helps too. Easiest way for me to find the strength to do so was say if I was struggling or wanted to get better at math I would go see a tutor so obviously if I wanted to play better I needed a private teacher to do so. RANT COMPLETE

Besides those few things I'm hoping that the season brings some great things for all the students. The best part is we just started so come October I am sure most shows won't resemble much of what I saw last Saturday. As always it is up to those students to want it or not (also a great method to getting better). That was the biggest lesson I learned during my four years. Even if you have everything going for you sometimes the outcome is not always what you expected, but sometimes when you have almost nothing you will surprise yourself with how much you accomplish because forgetting about the cards you got dealt with and using them to their fullest gives you the best result you could ever ask for: Pride, confidence and an experience you will never forget.
