A few things: Not only do I think Marian can score top 5 at grand nats, they have the potential this year to win it. If and only if they can perfect their show. Also, based on last weekends and this weekends results, I can see O Fallon sneaking into finals at grand nats. Except they wont be sneaking into grand nat finals with that wall of sound. wow. I wish Prospects season didn't end here. They would do very well at Grand nats if they went. I think Lockport and Lake Park will make semi finals at grand nats.

I'd love to see O'fallon in finals, but after seeing their performances this weekend there aren't really any glaring weaknesses that they can improve on to boost their score. I'm thinking they'll be a few spots out of finals, definitely top 15-20 though.

Grand nats is basically the Indy regional plus the OK/TX bands.

Illinois Bands: O'Fallon and Prospect did well and I'm happy to see that both programs continue to get more respect within the regional competitions they compete at. Really good for Illinois bands! Lockport Township was right there as well. I felt that Lake Park was a bit up the track for my liking and look forward to the day where they are truly competitive again in this arena. Franklin, TN was very good. I do not take prelims scores with much stock because the bands performed on different days. Therefore, the finals results tonight are most representative of where things stand going into BOA Nationals. Avon and Carmel will be in the Top 5, as we thought, along with Broken Arrow, Marian Catholic and possibly Tarpon Springs.

Marian rant: Of all the shows I have seen this year, and there are some very impressive ones going (Avon, Carmel, Broken Arrow, we'll see about Tarpon Springs), this show and its easy readability should score extremely well in General Effect, both in music and visual, transcending judging panels or the rounds at BOA. Despite the 3-4 point spread between the top two and MC, I really think the main difference between the bands tonight is cleanliness. I fully expect Marian to directly be able to compete with and score favorably within that elite Grand National semi-finals and finals grouping of bands. Winning a championship though is kind of like blindly shooting your gun at a moving target and their big issue right now from what I see are auxiliary drops, individual marching technique, individual posture, especially with young-looking players on baritone.

Marian Catholic should place in the Top 3 at Grand Nationals this season. The final musical selection is so beautiful and fitting.

Visually though, while I appreciate the demand, there are correctable but unacceptable posture issues going on in individuals. Kids have to be able to hold their horns at the same level and not look at the ground. Marian should have scored higher with this show tonight, but it's clear what separates them right now from the two current championship contenders: Feet, posture and uniformity. Get a few of these individuals straightened out, clean the five minutes of your program that were just thrown on the field over the next 2.5 weeks and this show will be an absolute gem. Win or .. wherever. It's something the staff and kids should be proud of now! But it could be so much better and undoubtedly, they will get it together.

I'm not so concerned just yet about Lawrence Township placing 9th, though their finals appearance streak is going to be in question. Center Grove is on the outside looking in and everyone else below that group. Homestead is going to be good and obviously will make BOA Grand National Finals, but I do not see them as a direct competitor for the Eagle and the show feels much more like it will place in the 6-9 range.

Anyway, those are my thoughts for now. I wanted to especially congratulate the Romeoville High School Spartans on grabbing 48th place. That's a big deal for many reasons. Good job guys.

Broken Arrow will be top 5.  Neither of the Texas bands (Flower Mound/Wakeland) will be in the conversation for the top 5.  MAYBE one will make finals, likely Flower Mound - otherwise, this will be the first Grand Nationals since 2000 with no Texas bands in finals.

My current top 6 in no order:  Marian, Avon, Broken Arrow, Tarpon Springs, Carmel, William Mason.  Marian has the most room for improvement, as they have rehearsal the next two weekends, and no band cleans like a Greg Bimm led band.

Every one of the other bands has at least one show, and Carmel/Avon/Mason have two, with Mason having about 1,000 miles of travel this weekend.

What happened to LD Bell? They were always a factor in my marching years (2005-2008) and now I don't hear anything about them.

L.D. Bell's had a disappointing (for them) couple of years.  They haven't won a regional since 2011, placed 10th at Grand Nationals last year behind Marian, and missed qualifying for State for the first time in 50 years this year.  They were 4th at Denton this year behind Hebron, Marcus and Flower Mound, and I really have no idea where to put them in my predictions for the San Antonio regional this weekend.

Woah. LD Bell went from 3rd to 5th behind Haltom. How the heck does that happen. Also Round Rock, TX who was also a finalist at Grand Nationals last year, um I believe 4TH OVERALL WITH MUSIC IN SEMIFINALS also did not make UIL State. Uhhh what!?! Also the Grand National CHAMPION Woodlands didn't even win finals in there area. Also What!?!?! Mind blown.

UIL's an antiquated system that no one likes.  Balash edit: Hendrickson won their prelims, beating CTJ, Bowie, Reagan, Round Rock, Cedar Ridge, then didn't qualify for state.

For the uninitated: Three music judges, two marching.  Judges rank the bands from 1-the amount of bands in the competition.  The lowest score overall wins.

Murphysboro Crimson Express does it again!!! The Crimson won their division again, this time at Pinckneyville, and have gone undefeated all season long. They have finished first at the Tiger Ambush Classic,  McKendree Preview of ChampionsWashington Marching Festival, SIU Music & Motion and the Pinckneyville Mardi Gras Field Show and Parade.

Along with the firsts, they have also won too many caption awards to mention here.

This once again proves the quality and dominance of the program, making it one of the best in the state. Congrats to Michael Moreland and the Crimson Express. It was great to see the police and firetruck escort when coming back into town honoring the band!

I'd like to give a shout out to Naperville North (not my kid's school).  I absolutely loved their performance this weekend.  I thought the way they used their music to indicate dialogue was wonderful.  I also thought they sounded and looked great - yet more proof that I don't get scoring whatsoever, LOL.  For sheer entertainment and a happy feeling, they were tops in my book.

Naperville North's shows are always entertaining. I loved when they did Copland. Hard to believe that was six years ago. They're one of the few bands left that focus more on the entertainment aspect of marching band and not so much the competitive.

I've never been a fan of Naperville North's shows, but Copland was definitely an exception. Good music and visual books and highly entertaining.

NN's performance of PDQ Bach's 1712 Overture is a very memorable show from many years ago that I really liked.
