guardmom 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2012 I've heard for awhile about the bias against Dunlap on this site and this week's predictions sure proved it! WIU 1A- You predicted Wethersfield, Cambridge, and Hamilton for first, second and third; claiming that Wethersfield and Cambridge were the only bands that have competed this year so far. Somehow you forgot that not only did the Dunlap Cadets compete at Metamora but they out scored Wethersfield by almost 4 points. WIU 4A- As far as Rock Island beating out Dunlap at UofI, that was due to the timing penalty. Had Dunlap not of had the extremely unusual technical difficulties with the pyramid (which had never happened before, didn't happen again, and won't happen this week), they would have out scored RI by at least .5 points. It likely would have been even more given that the kids were frazzled about what had happened. I realize that the predictions are just for fun. It would just be nice if such obvious biases weren't staring us in the face.
drumalum 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2012 guardmom, you can't have it both ways. Comparing between classes like Dunlap Cadets at Metamora is usually not the best way because we have all seen how the scores increase as the day goes on at many competitions and that looks like a prime example of that. They may have been better, but the massive increase between classes seems a bit suspicious as to that happening. But if you are comparing between classes, Rock Island did beat out Dunlap earlier in the season at Morton. They also beat Dunlap at U of I. Yes, both bands had timing penalties, which meant it still would have been really close. I really don't think the staff here is biased against Dunlap. They are doing their best to keep track of all the bands and their competitions. Yes, they may miss something, but they also provide an excellent forum here to keep track of the competitions, bands, and scores each week.
bandrox_73 3 Report post Posted October 25, 2012 guardmom, as a fellow central Illinois band parent I want to tell you how very impressed I am by Dunlap this year. The show is fantastic and rivals larger programs they have competed against. Nobody can take away what they have accomplished. The predictions made here are strictly for fun and are educated guesses. They aren't always right and they have no effect on the outcome whatsoever. We all have to remember that these competitions and the judging that goes with them are also subjective. We all want 'our kids' to be predicted favorites and to always win but that just isn't the way it is. I have come to a conclusion that there is not a general bias against 'downstate' bands....it just isn't there. Bands may carry over respect or reputation from previous years but we all know that doesn't really matter either when it comes right down to it it is about how well a band performs on a given day. Best of luck at Western and cheer your heart out! Dunlap is already a winner in my book
guardmom 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2012 FWIW, I'm not a Dunlap parent. My child has a number of friends in their band and I've heard them and their parents mention the bias. I blew it off until today. I was truly surprised to see what I did this morning. I challenge you to go back in the predictions, both this year's and the past few years'. When they indicate a likely close score between Dunlap and another band the nod is nearly always given to the other band.

Even though you may not be a Dunlap parent, I think it is very immature to one just make an account on the forum just to complain about this. If a Dunlap parent had an opinion on this then they would have said something about it. To take predictions this seriously and think there is bias over the band, I believe there needs to be some reconsideration of priorities. Predictions are just predictions. So what if they predicted another band over Dunlap. A parent's belief that predictions are bias and the amount of effort that they spend on finding out if that is true is bad parenting when they could spend the time supporting the band and just being happy with any outcome no matter the prediction. More power to you if you are different from it. Improper use of the forum.
saxyman 52 Report post Posted October 25, 2012 To be fair, if I had done the prediction for WIU, I would have picked Dunlap. None of that really matters though. We're all mature people here and can have a civil discussion. We're maybe, what, 75% correct on our predictions? If Dunlap wins this weekend, and you take as much stock in our predictions as you seem to, then you can take that to mean that Dunlap beat the odds, which is a good thing! I've personally been impressed with Dunlap the past couple of seasons and the progress they've been making.

Somehow you forgot that not only did the Dunlap Cadets compete at Metamora but they out scored Wethersfield by almost 4 points. We don't have Dunlap Cadet in our database. That's probably why they were overlooked. It likely would have been even more given that the kids were frazzled about what had happened. .2. Rock Island also beat Dunlap at Morton, with an almost 2 point differential-and Rock Island also outscored Limestone and UT, something Dunlap did not do. I challenge you to go back in the predictions, both this year's and the past few years'. When they indicate a likely close score between Dunlap and another band the nod is nearly always given to the other band. 2011: Washington: We predicted Pontiac. Pontiac won, Dunlap 3rd. Geneseo: We predicted Dunlap. Dunlap won. Metamora: We predicted Geneseo, with Dunlap fighting it out for 2nd. Dunlap won by .6. U of I: One staff member and polls picked LWW, 2 staff members picked Bloomington. LWW 1st, Dunlap 2nd, Bloomington 3rd. WIU: Wasn't predicted. Dunlap beat RI by .29. 2012: Morton: We predicted Pekin. Dunlap won. Limestone: We predicted Dunlap. Dunlap won. Geneseo: We predicted Dunlap. Dunlap won. Metamora: We predicted Dunlap. Dunlap won. U of I: 3 staff members had Dunlap 3rd, 1 had them winning. Dunlap was 5th. I realize that the predictions are just for fun. It would just be nice if such obvious biases weren't staring us in the face. We're not biased at all. I'm a little bit tired of that-both in the surveys and here. None of us have had a dog in the race for 4 years, me 7, some of the staff 10+. We're going off of this year's stats and bands faced , bands we've seen live, and videos we've seen-and early season, past reputation. Notice we said it would be EXTREMELY CLOSE between Rock Island and Dunlap. If we're wrong, we're wrong. We also predict 50+ shows a year among the staff, so we're bound to overlook a band or two. Don't take predictions so seriously, either. It's for fun!
JustYourAverageTBonePlayer 4 Report post Posted October 25, 2012 We're not biased at all. I'm a little bit tired of that-both in the surveys and here. Don't take predictions so seriously, either. It's for fun! I wish more people would realize this. I'm afraid that doesn't across to enough people that Dan and the rest of the staff will stop with the predictions all together, which I and several other people enjoy reading. So please, support your local bands to do their best and support this amazing site. Mod edit: Fixed broken quote link.
Percuss 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2012 Opinion... without bias. Hm. Can that be done? We can be as objective as possible here... even using mathematics to analyze who should win, but in the end, it's just someone and their opinion. Their opinion is based off their personal experience with a bands' show and scores... so... bias is a factor everywhere. Your opinion differing does not mean that they are wrong, or even out of line. I think it's great that the staff here does their best to give us reading material about Illinois marching band. We don't have a state circuit, no publication, no standardized judging, nothing. All we have is this forum. Even if there was a single solitary judge that read this site, I highly doubt as a 'professional' that they would take any word on a public, basically anonymous forum. No, I completely doubt it. If there was a judge that said "huh... what did ilmarching say?"- the problem would still NOT be with Ilmarching. It would be with the judge. drillwriter 10 Report post Posted October 26, 2012 Best of luck to all performers this weekend, especially to those whose season is ending this weekend. Each year, as I work on shows for many, many month, the season always seems to come to end all too soon (other than the weather hinting that it's time to not be outside for extended periods soon). I hope all bands and all performers have the best performance of the season. And, even though we spend a lot of time talking about scores and placements, I hope we don't get too hung up on these things. In 10 years, most people won't remember whether they scored a 58, a 65, or a 72, but they WILL remember their experiences and the journey that they went on during their marching seasons. And, that's what matters. Finish strong, everyone!

saxyman 52 Report post Posted October 26, 2012 Then why no love for Limestone over Dunlap at WIU this weekend? I'd say that they have a shot at placing, the only thing is that Davenport Central, IA already beat them at Normal West. The whole class is going to be very close, so any thing goes. I'd say that they have a shot at placing, the only thing is that Davenport Central, IA already beat them at Normal West. The whole class is going to be very close, so any thing goes. I just wanted to get in on the Rodney Dangerfield discussion and focussing on the "something Dunlap didn't do" part. However, Dunlap is picked 2nd and there isn't even a mention of Limestone in the predictions. I definitely see the top four spots being very close!
