I thought Bloomington and Dunlap had amazing shows (not affliated with either band, btw).  I thought LWW's show was great, but didn't grab me as much as Bloomington or Dunlap.

I also thought Prospect and Hersey had great shows tonight.  Hersey's woodwinds were spectacular.  Prospect was impressive visual, as usual (esp. guard)

Didn't catch any of the 6A shows

What a great day for marching band.  Really wish U of I had opened up the baclony, though.  Too crowded and not good enough vantage point for me!

I was hoping to get in the Balcony too...ended up with decent seats anyway...but still. They spent the effort to close off the balcony, but couldn't post a few people at the entrances to prevent people from entering or exiting during a performance!

Granted, 90% of the spectators yesterday were good spectators. They waited in the tunnel until a band finished. But it is still those few people that don't know better (or worse...don't care) that cause a problem. Come on UofI...it only takes a few people to monitor those entrances!

...

I had what would otherwise be great seats, just off the 40 about halfway up. Only three incidents of idiots walking in / out during a show, and one parent telling a group of kids to shut up. I wanted to stand up and applaud him, but it was in a slow section of someone's show.

Love to see afternoon recaps if anyone has them.

Perhaps it's due to the awesomeness of Illinois bands.  :P

Interesting point. I've been at 'local' shows where there has been an 'agreed on' floor of 50 for scoring, but I'd be surprised if something like that went on here.

The spread looks about right, but I think you're right in that the bottom is too high.

Anybody - what was up with the upper deck at U of I?  One of the main benefits of performing in a large venue is a relatively high angle view of the bands.  In my opinion U of I blew it - again.  I thought they were in the process of turning the competition around in the past couple of years but the choice of judges and closing the upper deck this year make me believe they just aren't interested in being a top flight competition in the state.

I also discovered that in spite of Flushing Pheasant video taping all the bands, the band directors do not receive a copy of their performance in their packet at the end of the day (I am not a director).  That is on top of a rather high $450 entrance fee.  Another strike against U of I.

If anyone else is interested in getting the deck open next year I would suggest a respectful email to bands@illinos.edu (if anyone has Houser or Rumbelow's direct address use that) and express your dissatisfaction.

If anyone has more info on any of this I would like to hear about it.

Aren't judges on that level?  I know the video taping was below a level.  Maybe they didn't want people on the same level as the judges? Who knows.
