Great Job to everyone who competed yesterday! I had alot of fun at Lake Park.

Also, did anyone else notice that Lockport is playing a song from Beyond Perimeters by Ronald Reagan? We were standing by them at warm ups and I knew I had heard the song before, and I realized it was from Beyond Perimeters. Whats the name of that piece?

I wasn't there, but knowing the music from Ronald Reagan's show I think it was the 2nd movement from Lincolnshire Posy (Horkstow Grange).

Its from the first movement. The part that sounded most familiar from warm ups is at like 1:45 of Beyond Perimeters.

Lockport got 4th! They really improved. Some other comments are Waubonsie really made a showing at Finals. I congragulate Huntley, few thought they would make finals. Good Job Downers South at prelims, I am really confused why they got 8th in finals. Naperville north was very entertaining. Prospect was very prepared. Wheeling took on Hindemith? 0_0. Lake Park's arr. of Angels in the Architecture was very pretty. Those are my impressions :).

Illinisian, as a wheeling band member I think I'm forced to ask what's wrong with us trying Hindemith? (and I realize this seems like I'm sounding antagonistic, I'm really not, I just want to know why it's surprising is all)

Also NNHSax, judging by your username I'd guess you're from naperville north. if so, I just wanted to say thank you to your band from wheeling. as we marched off the field after finals we passed you guys and pretty much everyone applauded us and said good job. I just thought it was really classy of you guys. that's what marching band should be like right there.

i'm really confused why downers south came in 8th at finals when their gaurd won best overall? can some one explain that to me. I'd also like to say i love their show this year and it has a lot of potential to be a eal powerhouse.
Because Guard is a caption and isn't factored into scores for placement. Only Music/Visual Individual/Ensemble and GE are factored into placements.

Oh no! that face wasn't the right one haha. I meant, wow, like its amazing wheeling is tackling Hindemith as a marching band. I applaud you as well. Sorry if I gave off the wrong intent.

haha alright, well then thank you! it just seemed like it might be kind of a "I don't think they can handle it" sort of thing, and I was worried that our band wasn't taken seriously in the general marching community or something

Wheeling has a really great marching program and I'm excited to compete with you guys at ISU. It's amazing to see bands do hard music for even a wind ensemble.

Some thoughts about the competition and the experience at Lake Park:

-Lake Park really knows how to run a competition. Their parents are awesome. When I got there, there were parents with leaf blowers blowing the rain water from the bleachers. Mrs. Snoeck might be the best announcer all season, even though the jokes get a little stupid at times. :)

-It was nice meeting the parents that I was around. You all were awesome. Thank you for visiting the site as well. (Note to self: Invest in business cards.)

-Some pretty great shows this year. I'll get more into them below. Some short thoughts, didn't write anything down.

Lincoln-Way East: Really liking the new uniforms. Design staff: THANK YOU for staying so true to the original writing of the Higdon piece. It's so nice to not hear a beautiful piece such as that chopped to pieces. Here's a great recording of the original piece:

(part 1) and
(part 2). Can't wait to see the rest of the show. Drill fits perfectly with the show. I have a feeling some may regard this as another 2008, where you either love it or hate it. Should fare well at BOA events and ISU.

Lockport: Bright me didn't realize that they'd be tackling a great Aaron Guidry show when I found out Wes Cartwright and Brian Youngblood are both on staff. They do a pretty good job of playing Ronald Reagan's 2003 program "Beyond Perimeters." I think a movement or two are switched, however. My concern is with the drill: I don't feel that the drill is doing much to help the show. There's a lot of halts while soloists are being featured. They could slip into finals in Pontiac, Michigan at the BOA regional. The show is there, now they just have to execute. Also, what's with the props? The band hides behind them, yes, but they fall down easily at this point in time with a little wind.

Wheeling: Speaking about execution...I didn't feel it was there for Wheeling. The demand for this show is sensational. I recommend watching Spring High School from Texas 1993's Grand Nationals show for a great interpretation of Symphony in B Flat and Symphonic Metamorposis. This show will improve with a lot of practice. Can't wait to see them enter the fray at ISU.

Prospect: Congratulations on your championship. This is so much of a better designed show compared to the last couple of seasons. The music is flawlessly intertwined, with some nice transitions from Over the Rainbow to 1000 Airplanes on the Roof, into Clair de Lune, into Septimus from "Stardust," and back into Over the Rainbow. The design staff really hit a home run with this show. One thing: make sure the microphone wire is not as taut, as I noticed the color guard girls had trouble getting their equipment out from underneath it. I predict a top 5 finish at the Atlanta Super Regional, and a top 4 finish at ISU.

Waukesha North: A cool Fitzpatrick design. Much better performance in finals, as I didn't feel the brass had a good performance at all in prelims. Always a pleasure to see them at local competitions. I wish they'd (and Oak Creek) would dip their toes into BOA competitions.

Lincoln-Way West: Another cool show. Only about 50-60 members, so they're still small. I've been told they have 4 seniors, so this band will (hopefully) get bigger. Some really good moments in this show. Clean it, and they should compete for a finals spot in Class 1A-4A at ISU.

Huntley: A big congratulations on Huntley making finals. According to our records, this is their first time making finals at any competition they've competed at. They were also 1A champions at the Phantom Regiment competition a few years back. I'm not usually a fan of Key Poulan's marching band arrangements, but this one is pretty good. Keep up this level of performance, and I'm sure they'll garner more than a few votes in our annual "Bands of the Year" voting. Great percussion feature, and a pretty cool show.

Wheaton North: A great show design that really suits them well. Show has no pauses, and the drill is pretty high velocity. Show ending reminds me of Santa Clara Vanguard's 2006 program "Moto Perpetuo."

Waubonsie Valley: Some really nice moments in this show. Good flutter tonging in the trumpets. A really nice moment at the end of the show with the wind whippers (have no idea what they're really called; they're featured in Ticheli's Angels in the Architecture. Any help? :))

Downers Grove South: Much more enjoyable than last year's show. If this doesn't make finals at ISU, there's something wrong.

Lake Park: What can I say? I absolutely love this show. Great moments throughout the show. Only 2/3 of the drill was performed, but all of the music was done. When the drill is on the field, this will be a truly special show. I think they could be considered a dark horse for Grand National finals if they keep this up. I know I'll be rooting for them.

Naperville North: You know, I really don't know what to say. There is so much stuff going on in this show that you start to pay more attention to the actors and guard than you do the music and drill. I tried paying more attention to the music and drill in finals, but found that it really couldn't be done. Feet were all over the place in the drill. I'm begging you, Naperville North: one year, try a classical show. I enjoy Velvet Knights, but I really like Phantom Regiment and Santa Clara Vanguard better. Music is performed at a high level. I think they'll be middle of the pack at ISU finals.

Coming later: the always fun ordinal breakdown of prelims and finals scores.

First off, thank you so much for your thoughts on our show! It's really appreciated! Any and all feedback is very helpful, especially since we now have a two-week break before Prospect to finally add in GE and clean up both the music and marching.

Secondly, yeah, I agree with you. Our performances seemed to go well, but it wasn't completely locked in at all times. Hopefully this is something we can focus on and fix, like you said, with a lot of practice. We're very excited about going to ISU; it will be fun to compete with all of the great bands there.
