ISU 2009

Recommended Posts

Also, while I recognize a few names, the judging panel looks pretty different from the past. I'm not sure if I saw a list of the judges for 2008, but going back another year or two, I'm recalling that a decent portion of the judges were more along the lines of college directors, but now there's more of a DCI, BOA, and WGI focus.

Here are the judges for ISU: http://www.bands.ilstu.edu/downloads/Judgebios09.pdf

Anyone happen to know which are judging prelims and which are judging finals?

Here's the judging panel for 2007:

John Cody Birdwell - U of Kentucky

Lee Carlson - DCI, WGI

Michelle Dirshmer - colorguard instructor South/Central Florida

Kirk Gay - percussion - DCI member & instructor

Bradley Kent - director of bands - Lamar University

Dr. Rick McEnaney - Clark County Public Schools - Las Vegas

Jeff Mitchell - DCI, BOA judge

Jamie Nix - University of Miami

Eric Sabach - DCI, DCA, BOA, WGI judge

Tom Shine - Duncanville, Texas schools

Thomas Verrier - Vanderbilt University

Bruno Zuccala - Seneca Valley Schools, PA - Cavaliers

And 2008:

Visual Performance Ind Field

Eric Sabach - Director, Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps

Visual Performance Ens Box

Rich Kemp - DCI/WGI

Visual General Effect Box

Lee Carlson -DCI chief visual judge

Visual General Effect Box

Going based solely off of reputations, this is what I would do for judging panels for 2009 (then again, what do I know?):

What I'm kinda confused about is this...Normal Community is bigger than Normal West, yet West moved up to 5A, and Community is in 4A. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, in fact I go to West, and the way I see it, the bigger class we're in, the more fun we have competing with the big dogs. I'd much rather compete with LWE, than with smaller bands because when youre with LWE you can challenge yourself to see how close you can get to their score. I'm kind of excited to see where we stack up in 5A, but I'm just wondering why we moved up when the IHSA enrolment figures show Community as having 1878 students, and West as only having 1733. Or is a difference of 145 students negligible when it comes to class placements?

How bout some projections?
I'll go ahead and do mine now...

CLASS WINNERS

1A - I'm thinking we might see a new winner here...I'm think we might see U-High win this class this year.

2A - Morton- The first class lock of the day.

3A - Marian Catholic- The next class lock of the day.

4A - This will be really interesting to watch...this will be a close one between Bloomington, United Township, and Lincoln-Way North, but unless they pull a top ten, it looks like LWN may have to wait...I'm calling Bloomington for this one, with LWN in a close 2nd.

5A - This will be an epic duel, seeing as how LWE and Prospect are two of the best bands in IL and are usually pretty close to each other...LWE seems to be having a bit of an up-and-down year, and I think Prospect will take the 5A title this year, with LWE not far behind.

6A - I didn't think this would be a very contested class, but it looks like it might be a little more interesting than I thought...Lake Park and Naperville North will be duking it out for the 6A title...Both seem to be having fantastic years (nice to hear that LP has come out of a brief slump!) but I think Lake Park will edge out NN.

FINALISTS

University

Morton (top ten)

Marian Catholic (top ten)

Bloomington (I don't see this happening, but I think there is a slight possibility that they might edge in as #10...I will do this as though they won't though)

Prospect (top ten)

Lake Park (top ten)

Naperville North (top ten)

Lincoln-Way East (top ten)

Downers Grove South (top ten...I think this might be the year for them...)

Victor J. Andrew (top ten)

Lincoln-Way Central (top ten)

Waubonsie Valley (top ten)

If Bloomington were to make a top ten score, Waubonsie will be out.

And I think we will see Marian Catholic win again this year.

Hard to argue with that. I'd love to see LWN get in, though. As far as finals go, after Louisville, I'd be hard pressed to believe that Prospect won't take it all. That being said, all the bands have a long way to go, yet.

I've heard some great things about Marian Catholic this season, it'll be interesting to see how Prospect, East, and Marian all pan out in these next couple weeks leading up to ISU though. I'm pretty excited, not gonna lie.

It seems really early for predictions still, seeing as each and every band changes so much on a weekly basis, but I agree with these so far. It's going to be an interesting season. Theres deffinetly some good competition this year.

Normal Community is performing early because they're going down to the Greater St. Louis Marching Band Festival, where they have a 1:15 performance. The first "Urbana" is supposed to be Lemont.

Yeah, besides Morton, you won't miss much in 1A or 2A, and then you'll still get to see Morton in Finals.

Hey don't sleep on Dunlap!! I couldn't resist.

I'm personally excited to actually be able to sit and watch the bands and not having to worry about performing (although I will be performing with BRMM later on that night).
