  1. Scores from 9/9

    I can't, either.
  2. Shows for the weekend of November 8, 2014

Dan what do you know about Hebron's show that it would be scored so differently by the judges? 1st to 12th- wow!
  3. U of I/ISU Discussion Thread

I watched all the finalist at ISU and thought (1) Prospect was the best and (2) weather was much better this year than last year. I was surprised that (1) Prospect did not win and (2) Lincoln Way North did not place in the top 4. Does anyone know where the final scores are posted/available? Mike I agree with you on both counts. The mystery of the partial show > complete show continues!
  4. U of I/ISU Discussion Thread

It was far less gloomy than the title and theme implied.
  5. U of I/ISU Discussion Thread

Bottom 4 of 1A-4A , bottom 3 of 5A-6A, random draw between the top 3 of 1A-4A and top 4 of 5A-6A. Do Marian and Prospect ever not go back to back here? They like to contrast the most complete with the least complete shows...
  6. Who Makes Finals from Class 5A-6A at ISU?

Curious to see what Lincoln-Way East does this year. Been an odd season for them with very different finishes at different competitions. Also looks to be their smallest ensemble to date.
  7. ISU - New Video Product / Live Streaming

Thank you for the update and providing the live stream- looking forward to trying it out Saturday night for finals!
  8. Shows for the weekend of October 12, 2013

Any more detail on the live streaming for ISU? I can't find that post here...or was I dreaming?
  9. New Uniforms

Not sure how I feel about these. They have been doing this type of thing forever. I don't know if they ever plan to completely replace their actual uniform or not. Forever? It's been what, 3 years? That is hardly "forever"!
  10. 2013 ISU Classifications

    This is great news!
  11. 2012 Marching Shows

The East uniforms are relatively inexpensive, and the students are given the option to purchase them at the end of the season. At least that's how it has gone the past few years, but they do have a new director this year so it remains to be seen if these uniforms will be used again in 2013.
  12. LWE Director Out

But will the tarps and props come with him?
  13. Nice comeback by LW East- Go Griffins!
  14. Marching Band Uniforms

If I'm not mistaken (and I probably am), aren't these new uniforms hand made for each student? I checked with my sources and while the uniforms are individual sized for each student, they are not very durable- essentially a "one-off" quality designed for one season. They are more akin to costumes than uniforms. Also note they save costs by having the guard in the same costume.
  15. Marching Band Uniforms

East's performance uniforms are not as expensive as you might think, and they still use their "old" uniforms for football games.
  16. ISU's Hancock Stadium to be renovated

Does anyone know what they plan to do with the west side stands as a part of this rehab? It looks like everything will be flipped to the east side being the "main" stands.
  17. The upgrade of the forums

Any way to not have the left sidebar take up so much area? Not liking the verticality and squished appearance of the forum entries.
  18. ISU reviews

Yes, I did....I know they didn't use any props and it was actually nice to see the change., I even like their new uniforms. I should have been more clear in my post. I was referring to the bands who did use props. Pardon the confusion, and there was no need to get so rude. This, perhaps, is the funniest thing all year. A fan of the program that trotted out a girl in a hamster ball 3 years ago, and a full choir stage casted like Glee the next, is actually capping on people that use props? Again, funniest thing I've read all year. Here's to you. Blahahahahahaaaa... For historical clarity, the hamster ball and the choir were the same LWE show, 2008's Song for the Traveler. And don't confuse fans of a program to also be fans of props...

  20. ISU reviews

Newbee guard mom: Welcome to the very fun world of watching your child, and hundreds of others, participate in marching band competitions. As an "alumni parent" of a former Marching Griffin, I took your comments about what you heard at ISU to heart, and since they were very much out of line with what I know my son had been taught during his four years there, passed them on to Clif Smith, the band director at East. He asked me to offer the following: "The philosophy at Lincoln-Way East has always been grounded in the belief that our members learn the benefit of sustained effort to achieve excellence and the concrete rewards of hard work. We do not, nor ever will, believe that our students should concern themselves with their ranking or rating in comparison to other schools. Their engagement before, during, and after a performance is a priority and the best place for them to present our product happens to be at marching band competitions. If someone suggests that they overheard any of our leadership or staff saying any of those comments I would reply that they must have misunderstood or mis-heard something that was being said. I am always the person to address the band before and after a performance and I have never in my thirteen years of teaching said anything of the sort to the group. Thank you for making me aware that someone thinks they heard this type of comment. We will continue to promote healthy performance attitudes in the LWE program because we believe it benefits everyone involved: the members, their families, our audiences, and the community as a whole." My son's four years of marching at LWE were truly a life-altering experience and I hope you can put what you heard at ISU into the proper context. Thanks.

You're not the only one...we have some "enthusiastic" alumni who seemingly don't know how to react as observers of a show after years as performers...some of the parents have wondered about this and discussed it in detail, and eventually we just chalk it up to the kids being truly excited about watching their former band mates and perhaps going over the top in their support. The LW schools do seem to attract a large number of alums to ISU. I know my son enjoys catching up with old friends for that one weekend each October!
  22. Scores for 10/23

ISU has a 12 foot pit area, in which the front sideline is included. Directors are allowed to conduct from outside the 12' pit area, from behind the back sideline, or from the end zone(s). I was at the ISSMA Class B/D regional in Chesterton a few weeks back. I was amazed to see directors/band staff conducting from/standing next to the pit, or in front of the drum major podium. One band had a drum major saxophone solo, and the director walked through the pit and conducted from in front of the podium. Thanks for posting this, Dan. I am surprised this is allowed, and now even more surprised more bands don't do it. Is the BOA Handbook available on line? I admit I haven't looked for it...
