So you would rather their be 2-3 LW bands finishing in the top ten every year.
And honestly, the ROI from a competitive standpoint is minimal.  Lincoln-Way East has spent its entirely history near the top of ISU.  So unless you're from Marian Catholic, Lake Park, or Prospect, who really have all the resources to compete with LW anyway, there's really no room to complain.  Two or three finalist bands wouldn't have been in if LW were 3 or 4 bands.
The fact is, it's financially irresponsible for a district to field 3-4 marching bands if they can't afford it.

Let’s get real.. LW isn’t accustomed to tons of success outside of the state. They had a very good performance tonight. IL ST is their Super Bowl.
I still think it’s ethically wrong for a public school district to field a band comprised of 3 high schools and compete against single high schools.

I attended this past weekend and was pleasantly surprised by a number of band programs who all seem to have stepped up their game considerably this year.  I was also impressed with the maturity of the shows this early in the season.  There are a number of bands from the Metro East that will do very well in the upcoming BOA competitions, none, however, more so than the O'Fallon Marching Panthers!  Their show "The Missing Piece" is absolutely spectacular!  While they only performed their opener and ballad, the show was definitely the pinnacle of a great day of marching band performances.  I would not be at all surprised if they make Grand National Finals this year for the first time in their history!

Remarkable Job to O'Fallon Township for their first ever Regional Win. Simply Fantastic. Not sure how long it has been, but this would be the first regional win in several years for an Illinois school correct?

I think we all are getting too personal and snippy, myself included.  Suggest we talk about how we can promote Southern Illinois bands and get them to the contests they need to establish some name recognition amongst the elite in the state and throughout BOA.

Behind Lake Park and Hersey. Yet they still secured both the Music and Percussion captions. I'm fairly certain I can bring MYSELF to say Murphysboro is "outstanding," but not on nearly the same level. The number of 1st place finishes is not a way to compare bands, especially across competitions (did these two even go head to head this year?).

Never said they were. But I will reiterate, getting a number should not be your goal. Putting on a good performance for both yourself and the crowd should be, and how you play for your audience and how your audience receives your show will be reflected in whatever score you receive. The score does not determine the greatness of a show, but the greatness of a show determines the score.

As much as I'd like to see Marian win, I would be equally happy with Tarpon Springs. Love their show as usual. O'Fallon making finals is rather iffy, but would be a very welcome surprise.

    Grand Champion: Marian Catholic

    St. Louis:
Both Lockport and O'Fallon make finals.  Broken Arrow wins, but it's not as by much as it has been in recent years.  Lockport/O'Fallon both finish middle of the pack in finals.

Just wanted to say that I absolutely loved O'fallon, they had a huge full sound that really excited the crowd and they had a great energy through their whole show. Also loved the drumline, they were killer.

I just watched Rolla from Washington last weekend (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lxFhEpkP74), not bad.  It wouldn't match up with O'Fallon (or really, any of the mid-upper tier Illinois groups.)  There was very little simultaneous demand; not much difficulty in the wind or visual books.

I'll have to agree with ejn that without having head to head competition with the same panel of judges, it's all opinion.  As to size of band, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree as having to design and execute a marching show for 200 is incredibly more complex than one for 50.  I also agree that it is more difficult to cover up a poor performer in a smaller band.  There are advantages and disadvantages for both.  I suggest you go to some BOA competitions if you want to see the best.  If Murphysboro wants to be seen in that company, you'll need to compete on that stage.  I also would love to see Rolla competing at BOA if they are as good as you say.  Only then will your premise that they would beat O'Fallon could be realized, until then, it's highly suspect...
