This really sums it up. And all the inequalities above seem much more so than a combined band. And why all the outrage now? This is LW’s 4th year! If they didn’t combine people would be complaining the LW district could potentially have 3 bands in finals. Which would been an inequality. Let’s all just  continue to follow, enjoy and support this truly exceptional and life changing activity.

Spoken like someone who was very far from the actual situation in that district.
Lots of old men yelling at clouds in this thread.
Go take it up with PCEP.

How is that any more of a problem then a band from a school of almost 4,000 kids with 2 different campuses competing against a band from a school of 600 kids?  That happened this weekend in finals and no one seemed to care.
Oh, and the amount of money spent by the band from the school of 4,000 is most likely at least 5 times if not 10 times more than the band from the school of 600 (I am totally speculating, but would guess its close).
If you want to say that combining is the issue, I would argue with you on that point (of which I am doing). The combined band is more a symptom of the much larger problem of inequality throughout the activity.

I feel like I have responded in detail to your point (that I have put in bold above).  And you have chosen not to respond, and instead engage with the obviously biased LW supporters (I can still hear those damn cow bells ringing in my ears from Saturday : )
I very clearly listed in my previous post a plethora of examples of ways there are uneven playing fields in the arena of competitive marching band.  But for some reason, the only one we seem to want to talk about is the combined band. Marching Band as an activity is inherently uneven.  In my opinion, its not "ethical" to talk about one "inequality" without recognizing ALL of the "inequalities" that exist in the activity.

I have remained consistent on the topic AND in responses to those who disagree. This was before and after ISU results, where of course I picked LW to win -- yet apparently am so JEALOUS of them that I can barely give them any credit.
Have ZERO reasons to be jealous of that program. Am more questioning how this is ethical? No one has been able to provide a good answer except to say EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING IT.
Don't like the trend of unethical approaches -- and I am not alone. You can disagree if you'd like, but I am not implying that anyone is paying off the judges or cheating. I also did say that the organizations like BOA should police these things (and clearly they haven't). What I have consistently stated is that it creates an uneven playing field, especially where competitions are concerned. I do not care if they have a combined band for exhibitions or parades, but it tends to dilute the achievement (as a staff) by combining forces to gain a 'competitive' advantage. Personally, I was not WOW'd by the LW program this year, although it was good and deserving of 1st place. Their visual demand is certainly improved and I must say that they certainly have a chance to become more and more relevant at the national level if they buck years of Super Bowl ISU (as they very well may be) and program for a mid-Nov. finish. Jealousy? No. It's called calling it like I see it.
I picked their band to win ISU based on the show that they presented at what has traditionally been their Super Bowl. Tell me what other event superseded ISU for the LW program? ISU is a big event, but obviously it is not the biggest event for many of the top bands every year. No one TRULY cares who wins ISU because there are bigger fish to fry. Ask other more historically successful Illinois marching bands and I bet they'll tell you the ISU results do not matter. So, good for whoever wins that event, but to imply that I am trying to take them down for their win? No way. I'm just saying that I think they'll be passed up, if history is any indicator. It will happen. How soon is a different story. They aren't NEXT LEVEL yet.
Here is a small piece of advice: When you try to call someone out and hurl accusations, at least be able to back up those thoughts with context.
I have pointed out historical results, scores, etc. to underscore my points about LW fading late in the year -- as ISU is their Super Bowl. It maxes out there, with the caveat that it *could* change.
So many examples.. but you don't like that I'm ripping a band for combining individual high schools. It's cool. I just want them regulated for what they are and now allowed to compete in the same fashion. If they want to have a class for all COMBINED district bands, etc. let's do that instead.
But a school with 2000 students going up against a band from schools with 8000 combined... that's a problem. And that's all I was EVER saying, besides the common-sense historical results -- i.e. LW's record after Nov 1 vs ISU Super Bowl = ISU Super Bowl matters more (traditionally).

Every Post you have made in this thread since Saturday has had some sort of negative connotation. We get it, you don't like the combined bands and think it is not "ethical"
"Let's get real" your bias towards one particular band is showing through if you go back and read the entire thread. From uniforms to super bowls to jealousy angle.
Just because you don't agree, does not make it unethical. You are trying to imply some level of impropriety on these bands and that they are doing something wrong. Why would
you try to put them in that light? I will defend their right to be a combined band as much as you denounce it. That's what great, we all have opinions
Great job to all the bands last week! You made Illinois proud.

Everyone has a right to their own opinion, and I genuinely respect yours. Hell, I might even agree with you to an extent.  However, the activity of marching band is riddled with "inequality".  If you want to say a band being combined constitutes inequality, I can understand where you are coming from.  But lets talk about the bands who are completely extra-curricular vs bands who get to rehearse everyday in class as a curricular ensemble, as well as after school.  Inequality? I'd say so.  Lets talk about bands who clearly are lucky enough to have the financial support of the community, school district or their own parents pocket books in a way that other bands couldn't dream of having.  More money means more/better instruction, bigger more flashy props, nicer equipment etc...Inequality? Yep.  Lets talk about bands of 50 or 60 kids being adjudicated against bands of 200+ just because their school is a certain size (every school has different requirements of being in marching band which could affect their size), inequality? Seems like it.
Honestly, I could continue, but I think I have made my point. Marching band has inherent facets that are not equal. No matter what we do or say, I don't think there is a way to take "inequality" out of the activity.  So instead of zeroing in on a particular issue (combined bands) and specifically zeroing in on a certain band (Lincoln-Way), why cant we recognize the inherent inequalities to the activity and accept them for what they are.  Instead of complaining about something or someone we don't like, why not remember what this activity does for the young people of our state, and support ALL of them.  Because at the end of the day, they all are 14-18 year old kids dedicating a boat load of their time and energy into something for the greater good.  Personally, I have MASSIVE amounts of respect and admiration for every kid who chooses to do this with their fall, regardless of what program they are in.

Actually, in the fall of 2015 all LW marching band members and parents from all 4 schools were surveyed on combining. Each school had a meeting to discuss it. Support for combining was overwhelming. It also had nothing to do with not being able to afford multiple marching programs as they are all parent funded.

I wouldn't let a few anonymous naysayers get you down.  Lincoln-Way has a uniquely special show this year. I will be actively rooting for them, and every other Illinois band competing in Indianapolis this weekend.  Hoping Illinois can get 4, maybe even 5!!! bands into finals.

So you would rather their be 2-3 LW bands finishing in the top ten every year.
And honestly, the ROI from a competitive standpoint is minimal.  Lincoln-Way East has spent its entirely history near the top of ISU.  So unless you're from Marian Catholic, Lake Park, or Prospect, who really have all the resources to compete with LW anyway, there's really no room to complain.  Two or three finalist bands wouldn't have been in if LW were 3 or 4 bands.
The fact is, it's financially irresponsible for a district to field 3-4 marching bands if they can't afford it.

Let’s get real.. LW isn’t accustomed to tons of success outside of the state. They had a very good performance tonight. IL ST is their Super Bowl.
I still think it’s ethically wrong for a public school district to field a band comprised of 3 high schools and compete against single high schools.

I attended this past weekend and was pleasantly surprised by a number of band programs who all seem to have stepped up their game considerably this year.  I was also impressed with the maturity of the shows this early in the season.  There are a number of bands from the Metro East that will do very well in the upcoming BOA competitions, none, however, more so than the O'Fallon Marching Panthers!  Their show "The Missing Piece" is absolutely spectacular!  While they only performed their opener and ballad, the show was definitely the pinnacle of a great day of marching band performances.  I would not be at all surprised if they make Grand National Finals this year for the first time in their history!

Behind Lake Park and Hersey. Yet they still secured both the Music and Percussion captions. I'm fairly certain I can bring MYSELF to say Murphysboro is "outstanding," but not on nearly the same level. The number of 1st place finishes is not a way to compare bands, especially across competitions (did these two even go head to head this year?).

Never said they were. But I will reiterate, getting a number should not be your goal. Putting on a good performance for both yourself and the crowd should be, and how you play for your audience and how your audience receives your show will be reflected in whatever score you receive. The score does not determine the greatness of a show, but the greatness of a show determines the score.
